Social Security Adds 13 New Compassionate Allowances Conditions Enabling Faster Disability Decisions for Those in Need

Faster Disability Decisions for Those in Need

Here at the Garza Law Firm, we know how overwhelming it can be to wait months, or even years, for a decision on disability benefits. For people facing the most serious medical diagnoses, time is precious. Toward that end, Social Security Administration (SSA) has recently announced good news: 13 new medical conditions have been added to the Compassionate Allowances (CAL) list, meaning more people can get their disability benefits approved faster.

What Is the Compassionate Allowances Program?

The Compassionate Allowances program is designed for individuals with severe illnesses or disabilities that clearly meet Social Security’s definition of disability. If your condition is on the CAL list, your claim is flagged for expedited processing, often resulting in approval in just weeks instead of months or years.

The 13 New Compassionate Allowances Conditions

The SSA recently added the following conditions:

  • Au-Kline Syndrome
  • Bilateral Anophthalmia
  • Carey-Fineman-Ziter Syndrome
  • Harlequin Ichthyosis – Child
  • Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation
  • LMNA-related Congenital Muscular Dystrophy
  • Progressive Muscular Atrophy
  • Pulmonary Amyloidosis – AL Type
  • Rasmussen Encephalitis
  • Thymic Carcinoma
  • Turnpenny-Fry Syndrome
  • WHO Grade III Meningiomas
  • Zhu-Tokita-Takenouchi-Kim Syndrome

With these additions, there are now 300 medical conditions eligible for expedited review under the CAL initiative. Since the program began, more than 1.1 million people have received disability benefits through this faster process.

How This Helps Disability Applicants

If you or a loved one has one of these conditions, you may be eligible for fast-track approval for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI). While every claim still requires proper medical documentation, CAL cases are prioritized and often decided much more quickly.

The SSA also uses Health IT technology to securely access electronic medical records from your doctors and hospitals, allowing them to make quicker, more accurate decisions.

How to Apply for Disability Benefits with a CAL Condition

You can apply for SSDI or SSI:

  • Online at www.ssa.gov
  • By phone through the SSA’s toll-free number
  • In person at your local Social Security office
